A Shorten Labor government will deliver $5 million create a roof top solar farm at the La Trobe University Bundoora campus.

The commitment will fast-track the installation of 6,775 solar panels installed on 27 buildings across the campus. This is the equivalent of more than 17 kilometres of panels laid end to end – the distance between La Trobe’s Bundoora and Melbourne CBD campuses - or enough solar panels to cover the entire turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground. At the peak of solar efficiency the panels will supply up to half of the campus’ daily power usage.

Shadow Climate Change and Energy Minister Mark Butler said, “This is another great example of organisations taking control of their energy future by investing in renewable projects.”

“Labor wants to make sure that homes, businesses and organisations can embrace a renewable future.”

“Those who still argue against Australia’s renewable energy future are not only arguing against global trends, experts and the need to tackle climate change, they are arguing against the clear wishes of communities all across Australia, including in Cooper” Mark said.

Ged Kearney MP welcomed the announcement “I’m so proud to represent an electorate like Cooper who are making this the climate election. From solar panels at La Trobe, to increasing our tree canopy and cleaning up Merri and Darebin Creeks, I’m committed to delivering real action to tackle the climate emergency.”

“Our community supports renewables and with a Labor government, we’ll get the national support to deliver a clean and affordable renewable energy future.” Ged Kearney MP said.

Only Labor has a plan to invest in renewable energy, modernise the electricity system, and bring power prices and pollution down.
