Education for the future

Education for the future Main Image

We know the life-changing impact of a good education, from early childhood, Primary to secondary school and University or TAFE, the Albanese Labor government has invested in your education journey to help the next generation of Australians reach their dreams.

Primary and Secondary Schools

What we have done

  • Under the Coalition, the percentage of public-school students finishing high school has dropped, from 83 per cent to 73 per cent, Labor is reversing this with reforms to Schooling Resource Standard funding so that the previous ceiling of Commonwealth funding (20%) is now the floor.
  • This year’s budget committed $126.4 billion over 4 years in recurrent school funding and the Albanese government is committed to working with state and territory governments to get all public schools on a path to 100% of the Schooling Resource Standard.
  • $34.6 million to make evidence-based curriculum and student wellbeing support free to all teachers and school leaders.
  •  Signing better, fairer school funding agreements to make sure public schools in the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Tasmania are fully and fairly funded - delivering record funding to schools and introducing targeted reforms which will help students to catch up, keep up and finish school.
  • Schools in Cooper received over $1 million to boost student health and wellbeing through the Student Wellbeing Boost.

Higher Education

What we have done

  • Partnered with states and territories to deliver over $1.5 billion in funding for 500,000 Free TAFE and VET places over Australia to equip Australians with the skills they need and legislated to make Free TAFE a permanent part of our education system.
  • Wiped $3 billion of student debt and making HECS fairer by capping it to the rate of the lower of either the Consumer Price Index or Wage Price Index so you will never have to pay more than you earn.
  • We’re committing $427.4 million to establish a new Commonwealth Prac Payment for mandatory unpaid placements in nursing, teaching and social work so Australians get paid while they learn.
  • Provided $350.3 million in commonwealth funding to fully fund free Uni Ready Courses enabling more student to access higher education and build their skills.
  • - We're delivering 20,000 extra Commonwealth supported places (CSP) to train more Australians at university.
  • Committed an additional $2.5 billion over the medium term to establish a new Managed Growth Funding system and introduce Needs-based Funding for universities and $54 million over the medium term to establish the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) to drive reform of Australia’s tertiary education sector.
  • - We're doubling University Study Hubs across the country so students can study closer to home. That means up to 20 additional Regional University Study Hubs, and up to 14 new Suburban University Study Hubs.
  • Provided states and territories with access to additional Commonwealth funds of up to $3.7 billion over 5 years as part of the landmark National Skills Agreement which will help address critical skills and workforce shortages in areas of national priority.
