Supporting Working Australians

Supporting Working Australians Main Image

Every Australian deserves a good job with fair pay, secure conditions, and dignity at work. But for too long, wages were stagnant, job security was undermined, and too many people were stuck in insecure, casual, or gig work with no rights or protections.

So we're helping Australians earn more, have more secure work and be safer in their workplace while protecting them from the Coalition's attacks – because Labor will always be the party of workers.

Labor is turning the tide—delivering real wage growth, stronger workplace protections, and more secure jobs.

What have we done

  • Created more than 1.1 million jobs since we came to government, a record for a single term while achieving the lowest average unemployment of any government in 50 years.
  • A first-ever Right to Disconnect to protect workers from unreasonable contact outside of work hours.
  • Passed a historic 15% pay rise for early childhood educators.
  • Supported working families at the Fair Work Commission by advocating for three successive increases in the minimum wage increasing minimum wage earner's pay by $7451.60 per year.
  • Reversed the decline in real wages of -3.4% when we came to office to now achieve the fastest annual growth of 4.2% since 2009.
  • Legislation for every worker to have the right to 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave so nobody has to choose between their safety and their pay.
  • Criminalised wage theft, increased penalties for underpayment of wages and made it illegal to advertise at jobs below award wages.
  • Introduced same job, same pay legislation so labour hire workers can’t be paid less than permanent employees helping tens of thousands of workers achieve major wage rises of up to 42%
  • Banned the manufacture, importation and use of engineered stone products, protecting workers from being impacted by the deadly disease silicosis.
  • Strengthened sexual harassment protections at work and increased the power of the Fair Work Commission to respond to it.
  • Protected worker's pay by preventing enterprise agreements from being terminated during bargaining.
  • Established minimum standards for gig workers to stop their exploitation and given casual workers new rights to become permanent if they want to.
  • Banned pay secrecy clauses to stop employees from keeping wages down, which disproportionately affected women.
  • Introduced new industrial manslaughter laws to keep workers safer and increase penalties for individuals and corporate bodies.
  • Expanded enterprise bargaining to improve the ability of workers to achieve higher wages.
