In a win for grass roots renewable energy advocates, an elected Federal Labor Government will fund a community battery for Alphington, in partnership with local social enterprise, Village Power.

Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen and Federal Member for Cooper announced this local commitment at the Alphington Farmers Market alongside local community battery and climate advocates.

So many households across Cooper and Alphington have embraced household solar, and this battery means power can be soaked up and stored while the sun shines, and then used by local households throughout the evening and night.

A community battery will allow Alphington residents to take advantage of storage options for renewable energy without facing the upfront cost of a home battery.

This investment builds upon the Victorian State Government’s funding for a feasibility study for a battery on this site and will be delivered once the study is complete.

Community batteries help to drive down emissions as they play a vital role in the shift towards a fully renewable energy grid.

Village Power’s battery would be delivered under an Albanese Labor Government’s Power to the People program, which will see 400 community batteries funded across Australia to provide reliable, cheap renewable energy storage options to 100,000 households.

Quotes attributable to Member for Cooper Ged Kearney

“This community battery will do a power of good for its neighbourhood in Alphington. Batteries offer cheap, reliable storage for renewable energy – keeping costs down and enabling households to go 100% renewable, even when the sun isn’t shining.”

“Village Power’s community-owned model empowers people to take control of the shift to renewable energy.

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen MP

Australian households are leading the way with their great uptake of rooftop solar – we need to make sure we maximise the benefits of cleaner and cheaper renewables – storage is how we do that.

I’m delighted that the fantastic Ged Kearney, as part an Albanese Labor Government, will deliver a community battery to Alphington.
